We had a huge day celebrating Boris’s birthday this week. We went on our annual birthday fishing trip which we love. It’s always nice to catch a couple of fish, but even if we don’t, we like just sitting out at sea watching the sunrise over the ocean as the sea birds dive and swoop, is so relaxing. I always get so hungry too, must be the sea air revving up the appetite. Boris made our traditional corned beef and chutney sandwiches, Thermos of tea, biscuits and boiled eggs (the eggs stop him feeling queasy. I don’t get seasick.) and a cold beer to celebrate a good catch. Of course he wouldn’t let me touch a banana at breakfast. Bananas on fishing boats are bad luck. We caught some nice small tuna and decent mahi mahi (some call it dolphin fish) which brought back memories of Hawaii where we enjoyed mahi mahi steaks and mai tais. We trawled for a bit, tried some bottom bashing and caught some flathead which were too small so went back. Apart from dropping my sunglasses over the side (they weren’t expensive but had those magnifying readers in them) it was a lovely day. That evening we headed out to dinner with the tuna nicely turned into sashimi. Fourteen friends came along to share the occasion which was lovely.
My old hens have been dropping off the perch over the last year. Another died quietly in her nest, head under her wing just before Easter. But the remaining old chook, Molly, is terribly lonely. She’s taken to following me everywhere. If I’m at my desk she’s at the window. If I’m in the kitchen or sitting room she’s on the doormat on the verandah. And if I leave a door open she’s right inside. I made the mistake of handing her titbits of food, a toast crust, or the like and if I eat outside she flies onto the table and sits in front of “her” plate. It got a bit much when I went inside to answer the phone and found her sitting on the back of the pale blue silk sofa. Fortunately there were no droppings…but really, how do you house train a chook? We’re still trying to train Mina the puppy.
(An American asked me the other day where “chook” for hen came from. I’ve no idea.)
Boris’s favourite present (apart from the fishing trip) was one of the new versions of the old soda water siphon. So we’re busy turning our filtered tap water into soda water. One can add flavoured syrups but we prefer it plain. Saving us a bundle in bottles of expensive sparkling mineral water.
I feel winter approaching so invested in a new feather and down doona that’s light and warm. Molly looked a bit concerned about all those feathers in it though!
Cheers
