I am so over dealing with the mould! After all the rain that has drenched the Northern Rivers and the humidity I'm starting to understand how men must feel about shaving. The house has a green five o'clock shadow. But the rain didn't appear to dampen the spirits of Blues Festival-goers. It's been a lovely Easter with all the family here, daughter Gabrielle and her two stepsons Austin and Landon and my new granddaughter (well nearly five months) Sonoma, my son Nick and his girlfriend Mimi. They all went to the festival, Sonoma in a pair of pink baby earmuffs - she slept through the music. Landon who stood at the front for most of the day, not leaving his spot once in order to be up front for Ben Harper was especiallly thrilled to run into him in the surf next day. Ben kindly agreed to have his photo taken with Landon too.
In the meantime I attended a gathering, arranged by Jenny Cornish and Kirsty Coburn, of locals and visitors for the Save The Kimberley Foundation. I am very passionate that this pristine wilderness and significant cultural Indigenous country not be mined or developed for a gas plant as is planned. There are other alternatives like putting it in places such as the Pilbara which already have industrial development. So many people in the East haven't been there so can't grasp the magnitude of its beauty, importance and what a tragedy it would be to lose it for future generations for the greed of the dollar. And of course off shore companies will reap most of the benefits. Articulate young Indigenous leader Albert Wiggan spoke of the how he hoped his elders wouldn't be persuaded to take the money feeling they have no choice. And despite what is being reported, the Broome traditional owners have agreed in principle to trade Prices Point for compensation, this is not the case, there is still a long way to go before the development is approved. My 'sister' singer Kerrianne Cox whose country is Beagle Bay was there with us at Ewingsdale Hall and sang and spoke from the heart, as did another of our supporters, Missy Higgins. Alex Pearsons and Mark Jones showed a documentary, "Old Country, New Country" soon to screen on SBS. George Negus cooked the food, some of which was provided by Ed Ahearn of the green Garage. While it was a small but significant gathering, I spoke of how I was asked to speak by at a hall in Mosman in I think '96. Noel Pearson hoped for 500 people to attend and five thousand turned up to discuss this new issue dubbed "reconciliation." When Australians understand what's at stake and what needs to be done, they rally behind a cause. I hope saving the Kimberley will get the support of every Australian.
