Well it seems that all this gadding about the country is paying off. The Islands flew straight into the bestseller lists at number two after two weeks. It's been fun but tiring with often five or seven events in a day - speeches, book signings, morning teas, dinners, library events and media interviews. But the warmth and feedback from readers has been wonderful, we all feel like old friends.
Coffs Harbour, Wagga, Geelong to Darwin l've been able to catch up with friends and family. In Darwin l spent time with Kimberley mates, passionate environmentalists Graeme Sawyer who is now mayor in Darwin and naturalist and writer Ian Hamilton who had some amazing stories. As did extraordinary Aboriginal activist and broadcaster Charlie King. My road buddy (and publicist) Jane and l also visited Darwin's new Crocosaurus Cove which houses exhibits including two ancient crocs - Burt the 80 year old star of Croc Dundee one and a huge albino croc, Snowy - as well as snakes and reptiles. We could have got in a glass cage to be dangled in the water with the crocs but seeing the teeth marks and scratches gouged into the glass Jane and l opted for cuddling up to a python instead.
We managed to celebrate Jane's birthday in Perth with a bit of lunch with wild artist pal Murray Gill as well as duck into a shop or three. Jane says l'm a bad influence in the shoe department!
My final book event will be in Lismore next Wednesday when l chat to Bruce McKenzie on ABC Radio in the morning and then I'll be at Dymocks Lismore at noon to sign books. This is an annual event as everyone locally has been so supportive right from the start. This will be my only appearance in the northern rivers as l'll be on the Gold Coast after that awaiting the arrival of my first grandchild.
Cheers
