On the road with my publicist Jane promoting my new book is fun but also frustrating! They must pay young gal "producers" a pittance! We had a radio interview at 8pm on night, live to air. We buzz the front door of the locked building and Jane says, Hi l'm from Pan Macmillan and l have Di Morrissey for the interview. The harried girl buzzes us into the deserted building. We step out into a floor of desks, one girl on the phone and the announcer in his glass booth. The girl waves at us as she's busy on the phone so we stand and wait near her desk. It's getting past the airtime when we hear her frantic voice calling my hotel looking for Di Morrissey. Jane steps forward and waves in her face - we're here! The girl had looked at our contact number hadn't read "Di in studio at 8.10pm." So who did she think we were? And let us in off the street?? There have been other "encounters" of left hand not knowing what right hand doing. And one bookseller came to a function where l spoke to 370 guests and brought along 6 books for me to sign for the shop. Her boss meant 6 boxes! We were in Brisbane for the Melbourne Cup....l'd been asking my late Mum for a sign and figured l had to back Honolulu (my new book being set in Hawaii) which cam in last! But a few minutes before the race as l saw the horses and Viewed hit me and then it twigged Mum was big in the VIEW Club so l rang Boris who got a bet on just in time! A great win. And isn't Barack Obama winning an historic event? My money was on him too - and not just because he was born in Hawaii! What a speech. We now await actions to match the words. I went to the Macmillan warehouse in Melbourne which distributes all the books they publish. Millions of them. 16 million sitting under the one roof. It's all highly slick and computerised but they still need staff to "pick" the books for individual orders. A fascinating experience and quite exciting to see piles of my book being packed in boxes to go out all over the country.
Been to Sydney, Melbourne, Geelong, Brisbane and next is Alice Springs and Darwin. Having just come back last month from Darwin l'm taking Jane to my favourite kitchen shop there to buy a prawn peeler that l brought back for my prawn eating editor and found the thing works a treat. Everyone wants one now! Along with my book it's a great gift!
Cheers
Di’s latest book The Islands, published by Pan Macmillan, is now on sale.
