Had a massive baby shower for my daughter on Sunday. What fun. An all girl gathering with the exception of six weeks old Lance who slept and was cuddled through the entire afternoon. It was an interesting age mix of young mums, single professional women and the "old hands" like Di Young (mum of two, grandmother to three)Liz (my editor, mother of three) and myself (mother of Gabrielle and Nick.) While "baby Hansen" was the reason we came together it was a great excuse to catch up with good friends and in between the mothering chat we also debated the current economic and political climate. Gifts were thoughtful and generous. Linley knitted and sent along a cute outfit, Brenda gave an antique silver spoon (so baby is born with a silver spoon in its mouth!!)but it was the modern paraphenalia that intrigued me. Electric pain-free breast pumps, high tech carry cot, stroller, pram, rocker combos, womb music CDs and have cloth nappies come a long way! While disposable nappies (thank heavens they're biodegradable)are handy, the new eco-friendly cloth nappies are great.
We had a real tea party with decorated cupcakes, lemon tarts, chocolate and strawberry shortbread, a decorated cake, wonderful cheeses, salmon rollups, olives warmed in rosemary oil and garlic, stuffed peppers... anyway it was yummy. So Gabrielle has her nursery almost complete now. However, I hope the baby doesn't come early as I'll be on my big book tour round the country in the coming weeks and want to be there for the big day!
I've been asked for my paw paw chutney recipe as everyone has a glut of them. I throw two or three medium chopped green or slightly ripe paw paws into a pot with approx 1 ¼ cups cider vinegar, 1 ¾ cup brown sugar, half cup sultanas, chopped garlic and fresh and crystallised chopped ginger, a sprinkle of cinnamon or allspice, some cayenne or sweet chilli sauce and a touch of salt. Simmer till thick and gluggy. Adjust to taste along the way. Put in jars. Great on corned beef sandwiches.
Cheers
Di is Australia's number one bestselling female author. Her new book "The Islands", published by Pan Macmillan goes on sale in November.
