Hazel Phillips, long time resident of Bangalow – has published her autobiography – ‘Dark River, Bright Star’. Hazel, who appeared on TV in ‘Beauty and the Beast’ when it started in the ‘60s soon became one of the stars of the ground breaking satirical ‘Mavis Bramston Show’ and later had the first women’s chat show “Girl Talk” on Channel TEN and won one of the first gold Logies. She’s graced TV, stage, films, musical revues, variety shows, done one woman shows and is still doing so. Hazel, originally from the UK, writes of her early days in Aussie TV and when her TV director husband left her not long after she had a bad car accident and struggled to recover and raise two young sons. Later she met a younger man and they found the farm above Bangalow and all was bliss despite her career biting the dust as she had dropped out of the Sydney scene and people thought she’d retired. She did appear on “Midday” with Ray Martin on Channel 9 but when her lover took up with a hippy backpacker Hazel was left alone on the farm with a dozen goats.
We were introduced by a mutual friend and Hazel stayed a couple of nights with me in Sydney and later when I moved to Byron I looked her up. I had a big party to get to know people which coincided with Hazel’s birthday so I introduced her to many new frineds and so a friendship was born. Hazel can always make you laugh. She’s supremely talented and I once saw her do a dramatic role on the TV show “GP” and I thought she could’ve had a new career as a serious actress. Perhaps she’s too glamorous but her talents are extraordinary. From painting, singing, composing and now writing.
Hazel will play the piano, sing and talk at her morning tea book launch at the Byron Community Centre October 22 10.30am. Tickets $10.
This Thursday a premiere of ‘Brideshead Revisited’ at the Byron Cinema sponsored by the Northern Rivers Community Foundation will raise funds for the NRCF Education Fund which helps young people from our region facing financial hardship get a tertiary education. Call 6680 8555 to reserve seats. Drinks from 6pm before the screening.
Cheers
Di is Australia's number one bestselling female author. Her new book "The Islands", published by Pan Macmillan goes on sale in November.
