In the last intense weeks of putting my new book to bed I hardly gave the Olympics a glance . . . I was in Broome and turned on the opening ceremony in the wee hours to see goose stepping soldiers taking the flag from the little girls and rather had the impression it was all about control and technology and not a lot of heart. I was on the commentary team for Network Ten to cover the 1984 LA Olympics and it was such an adrenalin hit and good fun. My assignment was doing “local colour” and I unearthed some amazing stories. Tom Keneally was also covering it for a newspaper and Princess Anne’s then husband Mark Phillips was there covering the equestrian events. We were all housed in one hotel set aside for Olympic media and allowed to make phone calls home every second night. (No mobiles then.) At dinner one night Mark returned from his phone call to say he’d spoken to his kids who were with his mother-in-law on a boat. (That’d be the Queen on Britannia, actually.)
So now I’m in that strange limbo-land having finished The Islands and starting to gear up for the next book. So Liz my editor and I have down time. She’s knitting and I’ve been doing domestic stuff. I even had time to visit my good friend Jane and Tony who have moved from Yamba with their view of the ocean to near Ashby with a Clarence River view overlooking the Broadwater and National Park. They have horses and chickens and goats and its serene and magic. Chatsworth General Store is the closest “civilization” and Maclean the nearest town. However on the horizon I spotted the roof of a very large home – a developer has built a mansion and guess what . . . this secret location will be a new (and pricey) development in the next few years.
After the upheaval in my garden at the felled tree, Country Energy have been very helpful, apologetic and helped me get some semblance of order back in my garden. I now have a large screen of new Tiger Grass bamboo to block the eyesore my tree screened. So I’m feeling much happier.
Cheers
