Every couple of years the electricity people come around and arrange to trim the tops off my trees that are getting too close to the power lines at one end of my property. A nice "vegetation specialist" came and we consulted on the tree trimming as I didn't want too much lopped off as those trees are a privacy and security screen. When they finally rang to say they'd be there at 8am last Thursday I was away in Broome, my daughter was in the house and I called my friend and neighbour Hans who looks after my garden and he met them, walked around with the supervisor checking which trees they were "trimming" and rang me (it was 6am in Broome) to confirm that everything was under control. The power people worked in one section and several young tree loppers from the company subcontracted to Country Energy worked near my waterfall feature beside the outdoor dining area. So Hans busies himself in another part of the garden and several hours later wonders what's taking so long and goes to check only to find the young tree loppers have TOTALLY cut down my 20 metre Bohinia (Orchid) tree to the GROUND! And in the process demolished a row of very expensive Tiger Grass Bamboo planted along the fence as a privacy screen. The place looks like a bomb site, I am now staring at an ugly tin shed and a messy paddock and distant buildings and there is no beautiful green backdrop to the waterfall. The possums and birds are hysterical. I cry every time I look out the window. In our neigbourhood we've been trying to get the power underground but they refuse. One neighbour refuses the power people entry to his property because of similar problems with tree loppers. So be warned. My orchid tree was 15 years old. I miss it.
At least there is one story with a silver lining. Jacquie Lawrence from Bonalbo won silver in Bejing in the kayaking. I've known Jac and her sisters since little kids, so it's been a thrill for all.
Cheers
