Well, the final pages of my new novel are done. Liz Adams my editor has been ripping her hair our as this final chapter has been like pulling teeth she says. I found I was procrastinating like mad - though I had quite a few legitimate interruptions - but I now realise that subconsciously I was reluctant to let the book go. The year you live with it is such a bonding experience even with the hiccups, panic attacks, tears and laughter. I relive the time I was in its setting (in this case Hawaii which brought back memories of when I lived there in the 70s)and the fictional characters become so real I talk to them (as does Liz!). We know them so well, like good friends saying goodbye to them is hard. And then you have to let the book go and allow it to stand on its own two feet out in world which is like watching your kid get on the school bus first day of big school. It's not the traumatic "birthing" process such as I hear Sandi Gandhi achieved on stage at the writer's festival when she had her "Enlighten Up" book literally pulled from her by Dr Mick. My novel (my 16th) is called "The Islands" and goes on sale in November.
We seem to have survived Splendour in the Grass but the traffic was horrendous. Took me nearly an hour to get in and out of town. And friends in the Cape Byron Estate suffered with rowdy holidaymakers in the rental house next door. Fortunately they know the owner who called the police but as they pointed out while the owner made thousands from the rent over the weekend, his rates are still the same as their little place.
Now my book is written and I await the proofs to check and edit, Boris and I are slipping away for a holiday to Broome. My daughter and family will be staying here awaiting the birth of my first grandchild! Just as well I'll be relaxed by the time I get back!
Cheers!
Di is Australia's number one bestselling female author. Her new book "The Islands", published by Pan Macmillan goes on sale in November.
