It’s been rather a weather focused week. Despite the torrential downpour that dampened the first day of our Writer’s Festival… the weather cleared and a great time was had by all, including dancing in gum boots! Big congratulations and thanks to all the workers, volunteers and the committee. (I’m on the Board of the Byron Bay Writer’s Festival but was caught down the coast and couldn’t make it). I think it might be time to give the festival a fresh look and waterproofing for next year! And I gather we have to thank a certain Native American medicine man for the dramatic change in meteorological conditions. Leaf Running Rabbit did the dance for fine weather (at the request of Board member Lynda Dean who is in Arizona) but what with the time difference there was a delay. Another Board member, author Robert Drewe, suggested a vote of thanks go to Mr Rabbit and suggested as a precaution we invite Mr and Mrs Rabbit to next years festival.
I traveled to Port Stephens in the rain (outside Bullahdelah sadly passing a toppled semi trailer where the driver was killed) to speak at a dinner at the sales conference of my publisher. Most of the staff, including the sales reps from all over Australia plus New Zealand were there and it was lovely to see them and explain what my new book is all about, where it’s set (Hawaii) and what inspired it and how it evolved as I traveled around the islands. It will be published early November.
Then in very nippy weather I went to a Yulefest party ( a Xmas in July event) with friends which was great fun. It was the full on, turkey, ham, pork, pudding and all the trimmings include a kitschy tree but with the addition of a big log fire. In addition to the carols we listened to the wonderful voice of blind Aboriginal singer, Geoffrey Gurramul Yunupingu from East Arnham Land who sings in language as he doesn’t speak English. It’s just a magical, exquisite sound.
Cheers
