My beautiful daughter Gabrielle and her husband, Barrie, have gone on Facebook to tell the world her news, so I can now share it with you too – she’s pregnant! My first grandchild. I am of course, thrilled, weak-kneed with joy. Baby is due the end of November and she is returning from Canada to our home in Byron to give birth. (Not at home but hopefully a water birth.) I’m told I’m invited to be in close attendance! There were a few nervous early weeks but all seems to be progressing well. I get updates from the womb. Pictures of baby waving to me, sucking a thumb, and keeping legs firmly crossed to hide its gender. (Must be a girl!)All this technology is amazing and helpful but I can’t help thinking some of the mystique of the whole process has gone – sometimes too much info! Of course I think back to when I was pregnant with my daughter, my first born. We were living in Hawaii and I worked for a TV station until til my last month. I did Lamaze natural childbirth classes and had a smooth and natural delivery at beautiful Kaiser Hospital across from Ala Moana shopping centre overlooking the boat harbour, like a luxury hotel. Sadly gone now. I was back at the beach in my bikini with baby Gabrielle in tow two days later. And looking trim and terrific I have to say. There were no excerise classes, trainers or gyms. I suppose it was just swimming and walking that kept me so fit. They were happy days, but with no family on hand, a bit of a learning curve. The big issue in my life now is what am I going to be known as? I don’t feel a Nana! Gabrielle has suggested G-G (pronounced Gigi) which stands for glorious, gorgeous, generous, glamorous grandmother. Well, shucks. I’d better start swimming and walking again to look good to welcome this special little person on the way!
Cheers.
