Flew to Melbourne for my publicist Jane's wedding to playwright and stand up comic, Johnny Harding. Fortunately the rain held off for the Saturday nuptials in a soggy park. Which didn't diminish the joy and happiness of the occasion. Jane and I have shared many adventures on tour over the past few years. She is a fantastic pr woman and very efficient and great fun. Plus we share a love of shoes and she knows every good shoe store around the nation. We have a stock of funny stories from our book tours, which gave author Matthew Riley, whom Jane also looks after, the idea to turn them into a TV sitcom which he pitched to Hollywood. It got as far as a pilot and casting but sadly the recent writers strike crippled it. Matt was at the wedding looking very dapper and I was trying to figure why he looked so "grown up" until I realised he'd ditched his glasses after laser eye surgery. Matthew's books are Clive Cussler meets Ken Follet with a touch of the James Bond thrown in and they do very well. He was wearing a huge watch that looked like it could propel him to Mars and he drives a Bond style car. I took the opportunity to dress up too!
Jane looked beautiful and Johnny was so happy and cried a lot. His family comes originally from a small island in the Torres Strait (Darnley I think) so all his mob came for the celebration. Jane, escorted by her mum and dad, was preceded along the open air "aisle" by two of Johnny's relatives - a didge player, the other with clapsticks and a small bull roarer. It was very moving. I'm sure they're going to be very happy.
Had coffee with George Negus and Kirsty Coburn who were in Melbourne for the 50th TV Logies presentation. Then to the airport to find good old Jet Star had cancelled the flight. Got home very late indeed. But happy I was there for Jane's big day. Back to work now!
Cheers.
