I’m so thrilled at the news that Quentin Bryce, Governor of Queensland has been appointed our first female Governor-General. I know her quite well as she was Chair of the then National Breast Cancer Centre Advisory Board for some time of which I am a member. Quentin is an excellent choice as G-G because she is so talented and will do a magnificent job. It’s heartening to see talented women being recognised and given a role to play not just because they’re women, but because they’re the right person for the job. Like another great friend doing a superb job – Marie Bashir, Governor of NSW.
Quentin was Principal of the Women’s College at Sydney University in Sydney for several years. I once stayed at the college guest dormitory when I was in Sydney for a board meeting with Quentin, and talking to the girls in the dining room they just adored her as she said Quentin inspired leadership, creativity and personal qualities of a very high standard. She is also exceedingly warm and humourous and has managed to juggle her family life as well. Quentin is a very glamorous grandmother of five !
By the way the NBCC now incorporates ovarian cancer information as well so it’s the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre, NBOCC if you are seeking any information on breast or ovarian cancer. Check their website which is very helpful and informative.
There have been some extraordinary women involved in the NBOCC from the current Director, Dr Helen Zorbas, to Ita Buttrose, Maxine McKew , Justice Margaret Beazley, women in the media like Deborah Thomas, the Editor in Chief of the Australian Women’s Weekly, and leaders and community workers from all over Australia including the heads of groups such as the CWA which does a lot more than tea and scones!
