I am just starting to lift my head and re-enter the world again to discover that Christmas madness and cheer is revving up. I went to Sydney to give a talk to members of PEN International at the beautiful old Customs House Library at Circular Quay and afterwards James my publisher took me upstairs for lunch at Café Sydney. Though it’s far more upmarket than a café. A beautiful terrace overlooking the harbour where a few office Xmas lunches were in full swing reminded me again how seductive Sydney can be. We had glorious Balmain bugs and a crisp white wine from the Adelaide Hills. As James remarked, we do eat well locally.
Flew back to Taree (I’m currently at our holiday house in the Manning Valley while my cousin is house-sitting and supervising building repairs in Byron) with Mark Vaile the former Deputy Prime Minister. His wife Wendy confided she was glad they could now get a life back though Mark will continue to work hard for his local constituents. And my friend Janelle Saffin, member for Page is out and about doing street walks, visiting markets wanting to meet and talk to people in her electorate.
So now I’m in having to focus on Christmas shopping. I went into Port Macquarie to collect my son Nick who has arrived from the USA and I found some exquisite abstract small silver sculptures of animals all made from old silver cutlery and polished. I fell in love with a crab (dessert spoons formed his claws) and found that it is all the work of a Tinonee man who lives nearby. I’ve put in a few special orders! I also opened an art show at the Manning Regional Art Gallery in their new extension – a beautiful space. The show was knockout, the work of Tinonee artist Rod Spicer. He is known for his landscapes and there were some magnificent paintings of the sea and shore as well as the landscape around here. But for the first time he showed some portraits and they were fabulous. Rod’s inspiration comes from the memories a place evokes as much as the subject matter. I should never open art shows as I always spend heaps. But Boris and I will treasure our ‘Ocean Glimpse.’
Cheers.
