Back in my house to the shock of the hailstorm damage - a devastated garden, water damage from six bashed in skylights, broken garden umbrellas and leaking billabong pond where the liner has been ripped. Bit of a shock standing in the shower and seeing the street where normally the house is surrounded by a wall of magnificent heliconias. Thank goodness my cousin Damien who was housesitting was here with his mate Glenn, a builder, so they rescued furniture, rugs and paintings and got tarps up on the roof. The insurance assessor was a bit agog at the damage in Lismore and Ewingsdale. Hopefully all will be fixed when we return from our trip.
Yes, I know I've only been back from the USA, Canada and then the Northern Territory a few days but I couldn't knock back a free trip to Italy to write a big article for an elite travel magazine. When I accepted a year ago I didn't realise how everything was going to back up! My clock - internal and electronic - is still adjusting. I had my Blackberry calendar set but to US time so I missed an important board meeting when I got back and then had to go to Sydney for yesterday's annual Pink Ribbon Breakfast for breast cancer. I'm on the advisory board for the National Breast Cancer Centre so I was one of the speakers. This year the theme was understanding and reducing risk for breast cancer. Some things can't be changed to reduce the risk such as being a woman, increasing age, family history or inherited risk factors. But there are other factors that can help reduce risk. Unfortunately a lot of information put out in the media and on the internet can be misleading. The NBCC has commissioned two reports to bring up to date evidence about risk factors and also help dispel a lot of the myths.
The NBCC has developed a web-based communication resource to help women evaluate their own risk level and what they can do to help reduce risks.
To find out more and go to the new risk evaluation site log onto www.nbcc.org.au
Cheers.
