My last week of editing the book, phew. I'm booking up coffee dates, tennis games, doctor and dentist appointments. Feel I'm back in the world again.
I'm pleased to hear that my friend Janelle Saffin is living back in her home town of Lismore again after working in East Timor as right hand to now President Jose Ramos Horta. Janelle has been pre-selected as the ALP candidate for the seat of Page. Without taking any political stance, it's wonderful to see someone of such intelligence and integrity, wanting to represent her local community in Federal Parliament.
I was contacted by Marshall Fittler, President of Regional Community Watch who is campaigning to get the State Government to come good on its promise of substantial funding (not the piddling amount handed out in the last budget) to start, let alone complete, Stage 2 of Lismore Base Hospital. He tells me that over five years ago the Federal government put eight million on the table and we've been waiting for the State government to come good with their contribution of the balance ever since. They promised Stage 2 would be built by the start of 2008. Marshall says one of the biggest concerns is the lack of a radiotherapy unit in this region. Patients have to travel to the Gold Coast (if you're in a health fund that covers radiotherapy) or if not, then go to Brisbane which could mean finding accommodation as well. As this area is classed as "low income" it's believed about sixty five percent of people living here are not in a health fund. Community Watch is concerned the longer the funding is put off the more the chance that it won't be built at all so Lismore Base could be downgraded (like so many hospitals in the area.) So we will end up with only two major hospitals on the North Coast - Coffs and Tweed. And apparently Coffs is struggling to keep up with demands on its radiotherapy unit.
If you would like to help lobby contact Marshall on 66244 879.
Cheers
