It's done! I've written those magic words "The End". My fifteenth novel - "Monsoon" - is set in Vietnam where I spent time last year. I always have mixed feelings when I finish and even though this is my fifteenth novel I always feel insecure and unsure about it. However my publisher sent me vintage French champagne so he must be happy. Or perhaps just relieved to have it as I've been running behind schedule. (Monsoon will hit the stores end of October.) However I can't go out to play just yet, I have all the editing to do. Along with my editor at Pan Macmillan I've found a great asset in Liz Adams from Dymocks in Lismore who has also been editing behind me as I wrote. She has several arts degrees (Bachelor and Masters with Hons)plus a Graduate Diploma in Islamic Studies. Apart from being a history teacher she brings a commercial aspect to editing as she knows books and what readers want, being a bookseller and doing the book reviews on ABC local radio each week. Thanks Liz!
I did sneak out for a gal's networking morning tea at my neighbour, Rikki Grinberg's lovely home. Eighty interesting women almost solved the problems of the shire if not the world! I caught up with old friends I haven't seen in a year or more and met new friends. One fascinating woman was Naomi Sharp, an American potter who in the very early 90s helped teach and establish the Hermannsburg Potters in Central Australia. (Where Albert Namitijira was from.)They now have an international reputation for their unique hand-built terracotta pots decorated with ceramic underglazes and Naomi's idea that they add colourful sculpted animals, birds and bush tucker to the lids, and the belly painted with the striking landscapes of the area. Naomi told me she is no longer potting but enjoying painting. What talent is in this shire!
And on Sunday I took my Sydney Silky, Bunya, along with Romany, my daughter's Vizlia with friend Meryl and her Schnauzer, Possum, to be blessed by the Guyto monks at Mullum. How lucky we are to have these wise and generous souls as part of our community.
Soon I'll have to start thinking about the next book!
cheers
